Matthew Lyle
The Knife of Never Letting GoMatthew Lyle is a hostile stranger whose encounter with Todd turns quickly from recognition into a threat of violence. He identifies himself as someone from New Elizabeth rather than Prentisstown, then pursues Todd with a machete; the attack ends when Todd cuts the ropes holding up silage rolls and Matthew is buried beneath them.
Identity and Introduction
Matthew first appears on the path ahead of Todd and Hildy. His face gives no sign that he wants to meet them, and when he asks whether Todd is from Prentisstown, his Noise grows rapidly and uncomfortably red. Hildy greets him as Matthew, but his attention remains fixed on Todd, making the question feel less like a greeting than an accusation.
When Todd blurts out a question about Matthew’s connection to Prentisstown, Matthew steps forward with his machete raised. He answers, “I was from New Elizabeth,” and insists, “I’m never from Prentisstown, boy, not never, and don’t ye forget it.” The emphatic denial establishes that he rejects being identified with the town, though the brief encounter does not explain what happened to make that association so charged.
Threats and Confrontation
Matthew’s Noise spills out images and words that Todd finds disturbing and difficult to understand. Hildy responds by ordering Matthew to control himself, addressing him by his full name. The exchange places her in the role of trying to contain an escalating confrontation, while Matthew’s anger continues to focus on Todd.
Later, Matthew approaches Todd again, swinging his machete. He accuses Todd of having no mother to protect him and says there are no skirts to hide him from what he did. Todd denies having done anything and backs away while trying not to reveal the back door behind him in his Noise. Matthew answers that the denial does not matter because “We got a law here in this town.” He presents the threat as enforcement of a local rule, but the nature of the alleged offense and the law itself are not explained in the confrontation.
Reversal and Narrative Role
As Matthew advances, Todd reaches for the knife he has kept hidden under his shirt. Rather than meet the machete directly, he swings his knife through the ropes holding up the silage rolls. The cut releases the stored weight: the remaining ropes snap, the rolls tumble, and Matthew is buried beneath them. His machete falls from his hand, and Todd kicks it away before turning to look for Manchee.
The reversal makes Matthew’s aggression the occasion for Todd’s quick, practical escape. Matthew enters the scene claiming the authority of a town law and wielding a weapon; he leaves the immediate confrontation disarmed and trapped by the falling silage. The episode also keeps his grievance unresolved: his insistence that Todd did something, and his denial of belonging to Prentisstown, establish a history of conflict without disclosing its full circumstances.
